  • Graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, recieved flight training at the Naval Air Training Command stations in Pensacola, Florida and Kingsville, Texas, recieving his wings in 1960.
  • Assigned to the aircraft carriers, USS Forrestal and USS Enterprise during the early 1960's and was aboard Enterprise during the blockade of Cuba.
  • 1964, served an an instrument flight instructor at Apollo Soucek Field in Oceana, Virginia.
  • Co-investigator in the planning of the Manned Maneuvering Unit(MMU) used in Space Shuttle EVA's.
  • February 1984, MS1 aboard STS 41B (Challenger) making the first untethered spacewalk in history using the MMU he helped develop.
  • April 1990, MS2 aboard STS 31 (Discovery) during the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • Left NASA to join the Martin-Marietta Astronautics Co. in Denver, Colorado.
