Buzz Aldrin's race into space
«
on:

Can anyone explain why my duration A, B, C, or D missions blow up on the pad?!? when the safety check appears, it says "0 vs 100" Verrry frustrating because I have more than 0 invested. It must be a bug, but I have the 1.01 patch
Thanks

Which are you playing, US or USSR?
What booster are you using, and what is it's reliability?
Have you fired off lunar probes yet?
These could all be factors.
Let me know, I'll try to help out!

Hi,
Using Atlas/Mercury configuration for duration B. The safety is about 90/80 and Im using Cooper. I remember I used to close out Mercury with a duration B flight w/Cooper(like the real NASA) and it worked. I fired the Explorer, but not the flyby. Also I lost my access book, I don't know if that makes a difference?
Thanks guy. I'll launch some flybys and see if that works.

I wish I could play that game... I tried to install it on my Windows 98 computer but I couldn't get it to work.
"> I wish someone would make an updated version because it is a classic.

Did you download the game from home of the underdogs?
I got it to work on my W98 after a couple of tries.
I can't get the ROM version to work, but the DOS one works. I think there is a copy protect in the program that sabotages your duration missions if you enter the wrong number.

Yeah, I got it from Underdogs. I'm going to try it again.
I've never actually played the game... when it originally came out I didn't have an IBM compatible computer (I had a Commodore 64!) and by the time I had a PC the game was out of stores and I couldn't find it (until I found Underdogs).
Now that you're here I can try installing it again and if I have problems maybe you can help.

You are correct on the copy protect sabotaging the missions.
Best way to beat that is to save prior to that season and if the mission suffers catastrophic failure, re-start and try another response.
I know it is time consuming, but it worked for me when I had loaned out my book.

The problem I had was with the graphics... they didn't display properly.

I recently asked at a local computer gaming store if the owner could help me track down the CD-ROM version of the game.
I'll keep you posted!!!
Although, I must admit, he didn't seem overly enthousiastic!

I got it to work finally!!!
Thanks for your help. The copy protect page is at home of the underdogs.
I had trouble starting my game but I shut down windows and restart in ms-dos. Then I cd to \Buzz (my game file) then I type Baris. I dont know why, but this works for me. If you want I can e-mail you my copy. I dont know where I got it but it is a ZIP file.

I'm going to download it from Underdogs again on the weekend and give it another try. It might just need some tweaking of my autoexec.bat to run correctly in DOS mode.
I didn't know about the security feature, so I'm glad you mentioned that the manual can be downloaded from Underdogs.

Blast Off Anyone?

Reply #13 on:

I am writting my own version of BARIS, which I call Blast Off. It is running about 20 MEGs currently, is only about 1/3rd done, and is pretty buggy.
">
But it does have:
the Redstone rocket
">
the 59-60 race to send satelittes to the moon
">
the X20 Dynasoar (launch on a Titan)
">
the Russian Spiral spaceplane
">
Lots of historic photos that I've downloaded from the web, and some screen captures from the original game.
However when Columbia broke up I kinda lost heart and haven't worked on it for awhile.
I know there are fans of the game that would like to see an updated version, but I don't know if I can legally provide this to anyone else, I would probably be violating who knows how many copyrights of the photos I've downloaded, not to mention infringing on Interplay or Virgin's rights.
I used to work for Interplay, and know Rusty Buchert, who was the producer on the original game, so I could try to find out what Interplay's attitude is, but I doubt they will be friendly to the idea of either reissuing the game, or of allowing me to distribute the game on my own.
Anyway if anyone knows about the legalities invoved in something like this I would like to hear what options, if any, I have to get this out to other fans of the game like myself.

It sounds like a fantastic game!
I'm not sure about the legal issues involved... if it is more or less a direct immitation of the original BARIS you probably will have to sort it out with the owners of the copyright. It's hard to believe they would care about a game that won't even run on modern computers, but I'm betting that if they believe there is still a way to make money from BARIS they will.
I don't think NASA would mind if you used public domain photos or videos. I think the only NASA images you have to get permission to use are their official logos. But don't quote me on that, I'm not a lawyer.
